Not a great swimmer! We have positions for you to work, and will work with you to improve your swimming to pass the test!

The Des Moines Pool Metropolitan Pool District (The District) continually builds a high-quality workforce, fosters a positive work culture and promotes a learning environment.  Training and certifications are available to ensure delivery of exceptional customer service to our District and surrounding communities.

Lifeguarding & Other Part-Time Positions

 

Free Certification and Training Opportunities (Updated 5/10/23)

The District continually offers Lifeguard and Swim Instructor Certifications. We are building an interest list for potential candidates.     • SWIM INSTRUCTOR TRAINING: Click here to sign up for notifications of next class. We plan on having a training in Early Summer(June) and more future dates to be announced. Exact dates and times for all classes are to be determined. All participants must be able to meet the following physical requirements:
      • Must be 16 years or older at completion of course
        • Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke – 25 yards
        • Butterfly – 15 yards
        • Back float for 1 minute (floating or sculling)
        • Tread water for 1 minute
    • LIFEGUARD TRAINING: Click here to sign up for notifications of next class. We plan on having a training the week of Highline School District Winter Break and Spring Break (April), Early Summer(June) and Late Summer (August). We may add or cancel a class time depending on interest. Dates for all classes are to be determined, as they are dependent on applicant and instructor availability. All participants must be able to meet the following physical requirements:
      • Must be 15 years or older at completion of course
      • Swim 300 yards continuously
      • Tread water for two minutes using only legs
      • Complete a timed event in 1 minute 40 seconds (Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water.)

    • LIFEGUARD REVIEW: Click here  to sign up for notification of next class. Lifeguarding Review classes are designed to update your skills and to renew your current Red Cross Lifeguarding certification valid for another 2 years. 
    • FREE CERTIFICATION ELIGIBILITY: Free certifications are available for those that are willing to commit to working with the Mount Rainier Pool. Contact us for more detailed information. This program is sponsored by the Legacy Foundation.
      • ADULT SWIM LESSONS: Teens (15+) and adults that are interested in lifeguarding and swim instruction may audit adult swim lessons to improve their skills to take lifeguard and swim instructor certification courses. All audited swim lesson classes must be approved by management and have open spots. Contact us for more information.
