The Mount Rainier Pool continues to be closed for renovations. This has been an extensive process and we appreciate your patience while these improvements and repairs are being made. We’d like to summarize what has taken place to create a better understanding as to why this facility has been out of service.

Last year, we communicated a scheduled closure for major renovations on the 43 year-old facility. These improvements included replacing the pool liner, bulkhead, tiling and surge tank. After the pool was drained, our contractors discovered extensive corrosion in the circulation lines, which posed a risk to public safety and were legally required to be replaced. This further delayed the project.

The pool had reopened earlier this year for three months when we were approached by the Highline School District, which owns the facility. HSD wanted to repair the pool roof, failing brickwork and replace clerestory windows, which required another pool closure. That investment was worth almost $430,000 for our taxpayers and would reduce the amount needed for further facility maintenance. It required the pool to be closed.

The timing was unfortunate, but we are grateful for these improvements that will extend the life of the facility and save money for our taxpayers. We also are using this time to assess and complete some repairs from prior renovations. We will report back about a reopening date as soon as we have information to share.

Our priority is to provide a safe, clean and well-maintained facility. You can receive the most up-to-date information about the pool renovations by signing up for emails on our website at  www.mtrainierpool.com. There is also a list of other community pools available to the public to use during the closure.
